Welcome to another edition of our podcast your Focus Driven Day with Lyman Montgomery. Planning sucks, right?

I was talking with a friend the other day and we were talking about setting goals and planning and my friend says Lyman I hate planning it sucks right and I'm a planner. So my response was it depends, safe answer. Well let's talk about it you see when a person says planning sucks but they don't have the comments or they say right what they're really saying is this, maybe I'm planning incorrectly, maybe I don't know how to set goals and turn those goals into a plan. You see there are three major points that you need to understand about planning. Point number one when we set things too far out is hard for our mind to comprehend so if a person says a five year plan or a five year goal the brain doesn't comprehend that let's face it most of you you don't have the attention span of seven seconds let alone to project five six seven years into the future so it creates a pain it creates anxiety you see I did a podcast earlier I talked about the past the president and funeral said the the past for a lot of us is depressive the future for a lot of us is filled with anxieties building unknown so the reason that planning sucks for a lot of people is that it's painful because it creates anxiety point number one. Point number two for a lot of people planning requires them to be held accountable and they really don't want to be held accountable they don't want someone to say well you said in five years you would have your Ph. D it's seven years and you don't even have a bachelor's. We don't want to feel the criticism we don't want to feel the steam of the criticisms I might want to plan. The third reason that people don't plan it takes work. Now let me share with you an easy way to plan. Let's say you have a one year goal the brain remember doesn't understand that so what you do you take that one year goal and you work backwards. You say what do I need to do every month 12 months in a year well a month is too far away for some people so you break that month down into 4.3 weeks. So what do I need to do every week to meet my monthly goal. Well a week might be too far for some so now you break that week down in today either a four day work week or a traditional five day work week. So for five days what do I need to do consistently to meet my weekly goal and when I meet my weekly goal I meet my monthly goal you see how easy it is. Instead of trying to project a year out you drop that bad boy down into monthly, weekly, daily and in some cases hourly. What I need to do two hours every day consistently to be successful. If you apply that approach to planning you will no longer say planning sucks you will embrace it and say not planning sucks. Hey I'm out of time but never out of things to say.
